The henhouse blues

Inspired and enthralled by all the fantastic musicians at our seeding sale last weekend, our daughter has been busy composing songs to the hens and keeping them entertained with her guitar picking.

This weekend

This weekend:
~ hosted walking tour group during this weekend's neighbourhood Jane's Walk (talked on the theme of moving from an industrial focus to post-industrial sustainable neighbourhood)
~ baked wholegrain bread loaves in the outdoor wood-fired cob oven to share with the tour group
~ harvested first rhubarb from this spring's garden for batch of pies (to be sold at our seedling sale)
~ cleaned and organized garden tools, finally
~ took walks to watch the 6 new baby goslings that have hatched in a nearby storm water run-off pond

In the May garden...

May is a busy month around here. We're getting into full swing as we plan, plant and tend the garden...the early plantings in the garden are coming up: peas, mizuna, lettuce, spinach, asparagus, rhubarb, parlsey, dill, garlic, green onions, chives, kale, all the perennials and wild edibles (red orach, sorrel, nettle, lambs quarters, dandelion); fruit trees & berries are flowering: cherry, apple, currants, gooseberries, strawberries; greenhouse brimming with seedlings, just waiting for a few more weeks before tomatoes, peppers and eggplants can be taken outdoors...a lovely, busy, vibrant time these days.
