This year all seedlings are for sale ONLINE ONLY.  You can browse our selection here.  Our greenhouse is bursting with seedlings and we want to get them to as many good homes as possible.   We are a very small homestead (1/3 acre) but all seedlings are grown with care, love and attention to detail.

All our seedlings are grown by us at Little City Farm, from certified organic seed and using organic soil.  They come to you in compostable paper cups, and are hardened off and ready for you to plant into your garden. We have unique heirloom tomato favourites in all colours of the rainbow like Black Cherry, Amazon Chocolate, Cherokee Purple, Pink Brandywine, White Oxheart, Mennonite Orange, and more.

We have medicinal, culinary and pollinator-friendly herbs like calendula, yarrow, thyme, tulsi, lemon balm, chamomile, nettle..and many more!

Also organic veggies like kale, basil, long red cayenne pepper, cucumbers, watermelon, zucchini, greens, and more...

HEIRLOOM TOMATOES & MEDICINAL HERB SEEDLINGS FROM LITTLE CITY FARM!  For the second year in a row, we are offering online pre-ordering for all our Heirloom Tomatoes, Medicinal Herbs, and other Organic Seedlings.

As many of you know, for many years we held a large annual Organic Seedling Sale here in May - but over time this event outgrew our 1/3 acre backyard!  And so we handed it over to our friend and farmer Angie from Fertile Ground Farm, who now runs the event on the May long weekend at her farm location.

For those who can't make the May 18 sale at Fertile Ground, OR if you want to pre-order seedlings to be sure to get what you like - please browse our selection of the favourites we have to offer.  Our greenhouse is bursting with seedlings and we want to get them to as many good homes as possible. 

We have unique heirloom tomato favourites in all colours of the rainbow like Green Zebra, Black Cherry, Amazon Chocolate, Cherokee Purple, Pink Brandywine, White Oxheart...

All seedlings need to be pre-ordered online here, and will be ready for pick-up on Sat, May 25 (or you can make other arrangements with us if that date doesn't work).

Our 14th Annual Seedling Sale at Little City Farm (co-hosted by Fertile Ground CSA) is coming up the Saturday of the Victoria Day weekend.

As usual, we'll have lots of heirloom and organic vegetable and herb varieties: tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, cucumbers, chard, lettuce, kale, broccoli, basil, perennial culinary & medicinal herbs, flowers (incl native pollinator attractors) and plenty more. Always a fantastic morning & almost always sells out so come early for good choice.

Rain or shine, cash only, bring your own boxes or crates to carry your seedlings in!

For the local folks, or those who missed the seedling sale last Saturday (or who don't like crowds), we still have numerous organic seedlings here for you!  We have 8+ varieties of heirloom tomatoes, plus various flowers, herbs, basil, kale, strawberries and other assorted seedlings. 

Please drop by during our "farm store hours" Saturdays from 10 am-1 pm.  We will have seedlings for the next few weeks, until stock is gone.  We also have organic seeds and other goodies available in our shop here when you come on a Saturday.   Hope to see you soon!

In the greenhouse today

Things are buzzing around here.  There are seedlings everywhere, the greenhouse is filling up with transplants as they move into larger containers, and we are gearing up for the annual Organic & Heirloom Seedling Sale coming up May 23 from 9-12.  After this sale, we will continue to have heirloom organic seedlings (tomatoes, basil, herbs, lettuces, kale, and more) available here for the Saturdays in June as well.

Here is a glimpse of what we have going on in our greenhouse one month away from the sale.  We're enjoying spinach, lettuce, mustards, mesclun, chives and bunching onions from the greenhouse raised bed, fresh chocolate & ginger mint leaves in our tea, and thai basil in our meals from seedlings that are now big enough to harvest.

The house feels like spring!  We have trays and trays of seedlings sprouting everywhere - all our grow racks are filled and brimming, the window ledges and table tops are covered as we move seed trays around the house to maximize light.  Flowers like zinnias, marigolds, sunflowers are up, cayennes, tomatoes, basils, lettuce starts, kales...We are starting to fill up the grow tunnels outside, and the new greenhouse with seedlings as well, even though it's still under renovation.  Such a hopeful time, starting to work in the soil again, planning the garden and thinking of all the good food to come.

Garden favourites

I think this year I have enjoyed the garden most of any year I've spent time growing food and tending the soil.  Maybe it's because our daughter is now 6, a little more independent, and also has become a very eager learner with her own little garden plot where she can work alongside (she loves her "Painted Pony" beans, rainbow chard, purple carrots, brightly coloured zinnias, and her calendula and lavender - I am so happy to have a budding herbalist in the family!).  I have just a little bit more time this year to tend to the weeds, keep up with harvesting the beans, chard, tomatoes and zucchin, and even just linger.  This lingering is lovely and new to me.  This year, with time for more garden reflection, we've started a family garden journal with notes on what each of us loved to grow, cook and eat; what we absolutely need to grow again; what we tried and failed (and want to try again).  Here is a list of some of some of our garden favourites that we hope to include in next season's garden - not that this one is over yet.

Lemon Cucumbers - sweet, prolific, easy to grow, delicious
English Telegraph Cucumbers - huge, delicious, satisfying
Jaune Flamme Tomatoes - lovely colour, sweet, bountiful yield
Taxi Tomato (one of the new hybrid tomatoes we have this year but well worth it) - delicious, brilliant colour
Black Cherry Tomatoes - my personal favourite
Red Zebra - first time we grew it this year, it's beautiful in salads along with Green Zebra
Matt's Wild Cherry Tomatoes - tiny and takes effort to pick, but so sweet and bountiful
Blue Podded Peas - gorgeous colour, so unique
Mammoth Melting Sugar Peas - such a huge yield this year!  so sweet, great to eat off the vine
Dino/Lacinato Kale - love it, can't get enough - great for salads, juicing, kale chips, steamed, soups, etc
Rainbow Chard - always a staple here
Lemon Zucchini - yummy small golden zucchini, prolific production, easy to grow
Braising Mustard Greens - we love the mix from High Mowing - delicious spicy flavour
Calendula - high resin variety - we never grow enough!  I love this annual herb/flower
Zinnias - we like the tiny variety and the giants of California blend - brilliant colours, great for cut flowers
Sunflowers - lemon sorbet, or small red varieties for bouquets
Fennel - both bulb variety and the fronds - a new favourite for cooking, and saving seeds for teas/eating
Cilantro - we can always plant more - such a delicious herb
Blue Potatoes & Fingerling Potatoes - great heirloom varieties, beautiful, tender, delicious
Shallots - we had great luck this year, super for roasting
Garlic - more garlic, and try lots of heirloom varieties!  We grew 100 bulbs this year but it won't be nearly enough to get us through the winter
Long Red Cayenne - we have our own saved version adapted to our property by now, a staple every year
Dragon's Tongue Beans - huge yield, huge beans, brightly speckled pattern that's beautiful
Strike Beans - a first for us this year, but had a huge yield and very easy to grow, delicious
French Filet Beans - always a favourite
Nasturtiums, marigolds (tall yellow), more flowers!
Tulsi Basil - sacred basil is a must for every gardener who loves herbs

Seedling Sale May 24 - One Month Away!

Our 12th Annual Seedling Sale is fast approaching - one month away on Saturday May 24!  (please note, it is NOT the Saturday of the long weekend this year).  Even though spring has been very slow in coming this year, it's time to think about gardens.  Our grow racks and green house are filling up with trays and trays of young seedlings, and a daily watering routine is a big part of the morning chores.  Soon comes transplanting! 

Come on our to our Seedling Sale just to experience a fun annual community event for urban gardeners and kick off your garden season - or find heirloom organic varieties of tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, basil, kales, broccoli, other vegetables, herbs, flowers and more.  This year there will also be lettuce seedling mixes available, everbearing strawberry plants (yaa!), many varieties of sunflowers ready to plant (consider planting a cut flower section in your garden for making fresh bouquets all summer long - we plan to this year!); and so much more.

Seedling Sale!

We have another exciting seedling sale this past weekend!  This was our 11th annual sale, held on the Saturday of the May long weekend each year.  Thanks to everyone who helped out - without all the great volunteers, vendors and musicians this day would not have been possible.  And what a wonderful crowd who attended - everywhere we looked people were enjoying themselves, meeting old friends, talking gardening, planning other community get-togethers.  It's inspiring to us to see such enthusiasm for gardening, homesteading and community each year when we hold this event.
