Handmade Holiday Sale - what a day!
Thanks to everyone who came out to our annual Eco Handmade Holiday Sale. It was the 10th year that we've hosted it here at Little City Farm, and I think each year it gets a little bit better. The weather was perfect for an outdoor event, the crowd was friendly and so supportive, the vendors were wonderful. Happy December to you all! Thanks for supporting local and handmade!

Herbal oils (solar infusion) Summer Medicine Making
These gorgeous medicinal herbal oils have been infusing for just over a month. Instead of infusing them in our sunny kitchen window as usual, I decided to set them into the sunny greenhouse and see what the difference would be. Such incredibly vibrant colours! Luscious vibrant oils, making potent medicine here. Pictured are calendula (orange oil), mullein flowers (yellow oil), and st johns wort (the red oil).
Solar Herbal Oil - Medicine Making Method
You will need:
1) Place flowers in clean mason jar. Fill jar about half way full. If using fresh flowers, let wilt slightly first.
2) Cover flowers with olive oil by about 1-2 inches. Let oil settle, then top up as needed. Flowers need to be covered to avoid mold growth during steeping time.
3) Shake jar gently to disperse oil throughout flowers, and dislodge any air pockets.
4) Set on a tray (to catch oil drips) and into sunny window.
5) Let infuse for at least 4 weeks. Shake jar every few days so herbs don't settle on the bottom.
6) When infused, oil should be a rich vibrant colour. Strain oil, compost herbs.
7) Store finished oil in dark glass bottles in a closed cupboard (cool, dry dark location).
8) Use in making herbal massage oils or medicinal salves.

New herbal lipbalms
We're working on a variety of exciting new lipbalms. These herbal lipbalms start with an infusion of organic herbs into organic oil to use as the base for our herbal healing lipbalms, including red clover, lavender, calendula and thyme. They are steeped for 4-6 weeks in using a solar infusion method. Red clover, lavender, calendula and thyme all provide wonderful healing qualities for our lips - healing chapped dry lips, cold sores, and offering soothing qualities. We believe our lipbalms are especially good because of all the time, love and attention that goes into making them. Coming this fall to our etsy shop.

Lavender first aid oil
NOW! NEW on our Homestead Herbals etsy shop - a new certified organic Lavender First Aid Oil made with certified organic pure lavender essential oil! Lavender oil is such an important, multi-purpose healer, and versatile oil, that every home remedy cabinet should not be without it. If you are only going to have one essential oil in your first aid kit it would be lavender oil.
To use, dilute a few drops of the lavender essential oil in a carrier oil (e.g. a light oil that absorbs well into the skin such as apricot oil, sesame oil, almond oil, olive oil, sweet almond oil) and apply as needed.
Lavender is an excellent essential oil for children and babies, as well as adults. It can make a beautiful aromatic massage oil that soothes a tired, fussing baby. It can be sprinkled on a pillow at night to help ease congestion and coughs, as well as insomnia and restlessness. In Ayurvedic tradition lavender oil is thought to be a balancing oil for all constitutions, and helps with congestion of all types (both physical and mental).
Here are just some of the many wonderful benefits of lavender oil (Lavandula angustifolia):
